Commercial Driver Training

Class 3 - Medium combination vehicle with a Gross Combination Weight of more than 12,000kg but not more than 25,000kg


Before you get behind the wheel...

You need to hold a full class 2 licence for at least six months (three months, if you're 25 years or older) before applying for a 3 learner licence.


To get your class 3 learner licence you must pass a theory test and present your current licence, a medical certificate, proof of address (eg bank statement) at an NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) driver licensing agent. The test consists of 35 random questions including road code and heavy vehicle tests, which you must get 33 out of 35. Practice testshere 


Once you have your learners licence, get your class 3 full by

completing our Class 3 course and Unit standards consisting of:

17575 (Class 3) 

  • Half day course consisting of theory and closed book tests
  • 2-4 hours driver training and practical assessment.


24089 (fatigue management, work time and logbooks)

  • full day logbook course.


A doctor's medical may not be required if you have produced one for driver licensing purposes in the past 5 years. 

24089 (fatigue management, work time and logbooks) may not be necessary if you completed it with your class 2 licence.
